Welcome Back to Moodle!

Welcome Back to Moodle!

In order to help make your return to Moodle a little easier, here's a list of the top things you need to know:

  1. We upgraded from version 2.6 to 2.8, in July.  For details on what's changed, check out this page in Moodle: http://moodle.vcc.ca/course/view.php?id=3931 (requires Moodle login)

  2. DL Support has created and maintains many resources to help you learn Moodle, as well as answer your questions as you develop and deliver your Moodle courses. The most important of these resources is our DL Support page, found at http://cid.vcc.ca/dlsupport or http://dlsupport.kayako.com.  This page is also easily accessible from the MY COURSES drop-down menu, as well as the HELP FOR INSTRUCTORS block which you see only when you have editing turned ON in your course. From our support page, you can:

    • Search our Knowledgebase
    • Submit a Ticket
    • View Frequently Asked Questions
    • Request a 1-on-1 meeing
    • Request a new course shell

  3. When contacting DL Support, it is extremely helpful if you provide us with your Moodle course ID.  This is the number that appears at the end of the URL when you are viewing the main page of your course.  (see KB1115 - Using Moodle Course ID)

Here are some examples of useful Knowledgebase Articles:

Reset your course, instead of copying it.
Posted by Blair Friesen on 15 November 2013 08:35 AM

Did you know that you can re-use an existing course shell, rather than making an additional copy of it?  This saves Moodle server space, which is always a good thing, and helps keep your course list uncluttered. Of course, you'll want to make and keep a backup of your existing course, for your records.

If this is something you'd be interested in knowing how to do, then type the word "reset" in the search field on the knowledgebase home page (http://dlsupport.kayako.com/ ).

New "Help for Instructors" Block
Posted by Blair Friesen on 14 June 2013 02:10 PM

Teachers and course managers will notice a new "Help for Instructors" block, located near the top-right of every course when editing is turned on.  Because this block is only visible when editing is turned on, it's not visible to students.

The purpose of the new block is to give Teachers quick access to the things they need:

  • DLSupport Help where they can read the latest DLSupport news, look through the newly created Knowledgebase, Submit a Ticket for assistance, to the DLSupport Helpdesk or have a live chat session with DLSupport staff.
  • the Moodle Guides, which reside on the CID website and are categorized into the areas of Development, Administration, Implementation and Additional Resources
  • the Moodle Explorations schedule
  • a link to follow VCCMoodle on Twitter
  • any important messages posted by DLSupport

Hopefully, everyone will find this new block useful!  Feedback is always appreciated!
